Wayne State falls to Quincy University in non-conference football matchup

The Wayne State University football team lost 31-14 to Quincy University in a non-conference game at Tom Adams Field on Saturday. The loss leaves Wayne State with an 0-4 overall record, while Quincy improves to 3-1.

Quincy took the lead in the first quarter with a nine-play, 80-yard drive that ended in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Bradyn Little to Kamrin Cox. In the second quarter, Quincy extended its advantage with a 21-yard field goal by Kiko Moreno. Wayne State responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Champion Edwards to Drew Hickmott, narrowing the gap to 10-7.

Both teams ran 30 offensive plays in the first half, and Wayne State held a slight edge in total offense at halftime, leading Quincy by one yard.

In the third quarter, both teams exchanged punts before Quincy's offense scored again. Two penalties against Wayne State aided Quincy's drive, which finished with another touchdown reception by Cox. Wayne State answered quickly as Brayden McKenna caught his first career pass for 42 yards and Hickmott scored his second touchdown of the game on a 17-yard catch from Edwards.

Quincy increased its lead in the fourth quarter after Elijah Genenbacher caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Little. A punt return for a touchdown by Troy TW Crozier pushed Quincy's lead to 31-14. Wayne State turned over the ball on downs late in the game but forced and recovered a fumble near their own end zone.

Wayne State outgained Quincy in total offense, recording 337 yards compared to Quincy's 308. However, Quincy had more success running the ball with 160 rushing yards against Wayne State's 58. In passing yards, Wayne State led with 279 versus Quincy's 148. Quincy converted six of twelve third-down attempts; Wayne State managed three of eleven.

For Wayne State, XaVior Tyus led with thirty rushing yards while Champion Edwards completed twenty-two of thirty-three passes for two touchdowns and no reported interceptions until late in the game. Justyz Tuggle caught six passes for seventy-nine yards and Martell Williams recorded nine tackles including two for loss.

Kamrin Cox led Quincy’s ground attack with seventy rushing yards and also contributed five catches for sixty-five yards and two touchdowns. Brock Wiley made ten tackles including two-and-a-half tackles for loss and one sack.

Wayne State will play its Homecoming game next Saturday against Michigan Tech at Tom Adams Field at 1 p.m., marking both teams’ opener in GLIAC conference play and continuing their recent Homecoming rivalry history.
