Wayne State University's women's volleyball team secured a straight-sets victory over Roosevelt University on Saturday at The Matthaei Center. The Warriors improved their record to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), while Roosevelt fell to 1-16 overall and remains winless in conference play.
Head coach Tim Koth commented on the team's performance following a challenging match the previous night. "Good response from the Warriors coming off the extended match last night," said Koth. "Both Kayla's had very solid matches and led the way today. Now we can take a break from conference play to prepare for the Midwest Regional Crossover."
The Warriors won with set scores of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-22. Wayne State posted a .253 hitting percentage for the match, recording 41 kills against 17 errors over 95 total attacks. In comparison, Roosevelt finished with a .010 hitting percentage on 23 kills, committing 22 errors in 101 attempts.
Kayla Giroux led Wayne State offensively with 13 kills at a .545 hitting percentage, while Paige Giehtbrock added 11 kills with a .360 clip—the highest mark for her since joining Wayne State as a transfer. Setter Kayla Dulgar contributed with 27 assists and matched her personal best of five service aces.
On defense, Giehtbrock recorded her third double-double in four matches by adding ten digs to her offensive output. Abby Macalaguim topped all players with fourteen digs. At the net, Giroux tallied four blocks (one solo, three assisted), supported by teammates Nicole Dupre, Leigha Baldwin, and Giehtbrock who also contributed multiple blocks.
With this win marking their seventh sweep of the season, Wayne State now shifts focus to non-conference play as they prepare for three matches at the Midwest Region Crossover event on October 17-18 at Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, Indiana. The Warriors will learn their upcoming opponents early next week.
