Wayne State men's fencing competes at OSU Open; Elsayed places at Satellite World Cup

Multiple student-athletes from the Wayne State University men's fencing team took part in The Ohio State University Open on Saturday, October 11, in Columbus, Ohio. Mahmoud Elsayed also competed at the Satellite World Cup in Split, Croatia.

In the foil competition at the OSU Open, Wayne State was represented by Finn McIsaac, Sam Gneuhs, Carlos Santos, Mitchell Gatrell, and Jakub Oronowicz. McIsaac finished pool play with a 5-1 record and an +8 touch differential (27-19). He entered direct elimination as the 14th seed and defeated Kedwin Chen 15-3 in the Table of 64 before losing to Henry Allen 15-12 in the next round.

Gneuhs posted a 3-3 record and a +2 touch differential in pool play, earning the 28th seed but lost to Ezra Mundy 15-5 in his first elimination bout. Santos went 4-2 with a +5 touch differential (23-18), securing the No. 23 seed; he won against John Kemnitzer 15-9 but fell to Taishi Ozawa 15-3. Gatrell finished pool play with a 3-3 record and +6 differential (26-20), earned the No. 26 seed, and defeated Austin Bates 15-2 before being eliminated by Wangjie Li. Oronowicz recorded a 4-2 mark with a +13 differential (26-23), was seeded No. 16, beat Josh Mumford 15-4, then lost to Samuel Freedman.

In sabre, Hunter Battisfore won all five of his pool bouts (+13 differential) and was seeded fifth for direct elimination after receiving a bye in the Table of 64. He beat Mark Whapham before being eliminated by Hank Bauer. Gabriel Dumoulin had a +12 touch differential and advanced to the Table of 16 after narrowly defeating Hanho Lee but lost to top-seeded Edward Maklin. Connor Desautels posted a 4-2 record in pools and won his first elimination bout against Michael McCrae before falling to Max Gerstmann.

At the Satellite World Cup in Croatia, sophomore Mahmoud Elsayed entered ranked No.17 globally in senior epee and was seeded second for this event. He achieved a 4-2 pool record with an +11 touch differential—the highest in his group—and received a bye into the Table of 64 where he defeated Giuseppe Torrisi of Italy. Elsayed then lost to Jan Golobic by one point and placed twenty-fifth overall.

The Wayne State men's fencing team will compete next at the OSU Duals on Sunday, October 12.
