Wayne State University's football team suffered a 59-0 defeat against top-ranked Ferris State University on Saturday in Big Rapids, Michigan. This loss marks the Warriors' sixth consecutive defeat this season and their first shutout in 130 games, a streak dating back to September 8, 2012.
Ferris State, which extended its winning streak to 20 games, held Wayne State scoreless for the third straight game. The Bulldogs dominated both offensively and defensively throughout the matchup.
In the first quarter, Wayne State managed one first down on its opening drive before punting. Ferris State's initial possession ended with a fumble recovered by Wayne State linebacker Spencer Lyons. However, after a quick three-and-out by the Warriors' offense, Ferris State scored on a 34-yard run by quarterback Wyatt Bower. Another turnover by Wayne State led to a second touchdown for Bower later in the quarter.
The Bulldogs continued their momentum into the second quarter with Jeremiah Lee catching a six-yard touchdown pass from Bower. Zak Ahern added another score with a 25-yard run. Wayne State's Griffin Nowak missed a 42-yard field goal attempt during this period. Ferris State increased its lead further with Chase Carter scoring on a 33-yard keeper and Cam Underwood catching a seven-yard touchdown pass from Carter just before halftime.
At halftime, Ferris State had accumulated 382 yards of total offense compared to Wayne State's 58 yards.
In the third quarter, Carter scored again on a five-yard run after leading an opening drive of 78 yards in ten plays. Jake Price added another touchdown for Ferris State later in the period. The only points in the fourth quarter came from an Eddie Jewett field goal.
Overall, Ferris State finished with 637 total offensive yards on 76 plays, including 437 rushing yards. Wayne State was limited to just 110 total yards and gained only 24 rushing yards on as many carries.
For Wayne State, D'Vaun Bentley led with 43 rushing yards while quarterbacks Champion Edwards and Carson Creehan combined for 86 passing yards. Justyz Tuggle, Bentley, and XaVior Tyus each caught two passes. Defensively, Logan McGraw and Martell Williams recorded twelve tackles apiece.
Ferris State's Chase Carter rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns; Bulldog quarterbacks completed fourteen of eighteen passes for two more scores.
Wayne State will look to rebound when it hosts Davenport University at Tom Adams Field next Saturday at 1 p.m.
