Two members of the Wayne State University men's diving team participated in the first Detroit Diving Classic on Saturday at Matthaei Natatorium. Max Wasiniak and John Martin represented Wayne State in the event, which featured competitors from three schools: Wayne State, Aquinas College, and Davenport University.
Eighteen divers competed across both men's and women's events, with eight men and ten women taking part. Wasiniak secured first place in both the Men's 1-Meter (475.30 points) and 3-Meter (489.35 points) Championships, each consisting of 11 dives. Martin finished fourth in both events, scoring 421.45 points in the 1-Meter and 443.20 points in the 3-Meter competition.
Head diving coach Jason Trout said, "The first-ever Detroit Diving Classic was a great way to open our season. Junior Max Wasiniak swept first-place in both the Men's 1-M and 3-M Championships (11 Dives). Max earned the first of two required national cuts, which is an incredible start this early in the season. Overall, I am proud of how the team competed and cannot wait to see how we continue to progress throughout the year."
Neither Wasiniak nor Martin participated in either the Men's 1-Meter or 3-Meter Championship events that consisted of six dives.
Wayne State's next event will be an Alumni Meet on Friday, October 24 at Matthaei Natatorium. The team will then travel to Marquette for a meet against Northern Michigan on November 7 and 8.
