Wayne State University's women's volleyball team secured its ninth sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory over Lake Superior State on Friday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The Warriors improved their record to 18-5 overall and 10-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), while Lake Superior State fell to 1-19 overall and 1-12 in conference play.
"Tonight was a very steady performance by the Warriors on an emotional senior night for Lake State," said head coach Tim Koth. "We got strong contributions across the board tonight and I'm proud of the team."
Wayne State posted its second highest hitting percentage of the season at .344, just behind its .354 mark against Rockhurst earlier this year. The team recorded 46 kills and 14 errors on 93 total attacks. In comparison, Lake Superior State finished with a .095 hitting percentage, tallying 23 kills and 15 errors on 84 attempts.
The Warriors' strongest set came in the second, where they hit .467 with 16 kills and two errors on 30 swings. Lake Superior State's best effort also came in the second set, hitting .160.
Individually, Kayla Giroux led Wayne State with 14 kills and only one error on 23 attempts for a .565 efficiency rate. Katerina Stout contributed eight kills with just one error on ten swings for a .700 attack percentage. Setter Kayla Dulgar distributed 37 assists during the match.
From behind the service line, Paige Giehtbrock delivered four aces—matching her career high—while Abby Macalaguim added two aces to tie her season best.
On defense, Kendyl Andrews led all players with 14 digs. At the net, Wayne State had two solo blocks from Nicole Dupre and Leigha Baldwin.
Wayne State will conclude its regular-season road schedule Saturday when it visits Saginaw Valley State for a match scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
