The Wayne State University baseball team continued its strong start to the season on March 11, winning its fifth straight game with a 6-2 victory over Winona State in Davenport, Florida. The Warriors improved their record to 13-2 overall, while Winona State fell to 5-8. Wayne State is scheduled to play Minnesota Duluth next.
This win highlights the team’s momentum as it competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and at the NCAA Division II level, according to the official website. The Warriors are known for their competitive spirit and have previously captured the GLIAC Tournament title in 2010.
Wayne State took control early in the game, scoring four runs in the third inning. Two of those runs came from Winona State errors, while Owen Tuccinardi and Drew Hill each contributed RBI singles. Gavin Nash delivered a strong pitching performance, lasting seven innings and allowing only two earned runs on four hits with one walk and eleven strikeouts across ninety-seven pitches. Will DeMasse closed out the game with two scoreless innings for his first career save.
Offensively, three players had multi-hit games: Nick Sandiha Jr., Ty Garza, and Gabe Zeldes. Sandiha went three-for-four with one run scored; Garza was two-for-three with one run, one RBI, and a walk; Zeldes finished two-for-four with one run and one RBI.
The Warriors serve as the nickname for Wayne State University’s athletics teams, with ‘W the Warrior’ as their official mascot according to the official website. The men’s baseball program plays its home games in Detroit, Michigan.
