The Wayne State University baseball team secured a 15-1 win over Findlay on Sunday, taking the series and marking their third consecutive series victory to start the season. The Warriors, now with a 10-2 overall record, will next participate in six games over six days at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida after an eight-day break.
Wayne State scored in five different innings, tallying 15 runs on 11 hits. Eight players recorded hits, with Bennett Hitzelberger going 2-for-3, Caleb Sanders finishing 2-for-6, and Ty Garza also posting a 2-for-3 performance. Hitzelberger scored four times while Nick Sandiha Jr. crossed home plate three times. Sanders, Garza, and Brayden Crowe each scored twice.
Seven of the team’s hits were for extra bases. Home runs by Crowe and Brady Blakita came in the eighth inning; Crowe hit his second homer of the season for three runs and Blakita followed with his first of the year for two runs. Hitzelberger (twice), Sanders, and Garza all doubled, while Alfredo Velazquez tripled for the first time this season.
Pitcher Gabe Nazelli earned his first win of the year after pitching five innings with one earned run allowed on three hits. He struck out seven batters across 82 pitches. Relievers Will DeMasse, Macio Miller, and Coy Plummer combined for four scoreless innings to close out the game.
The Wayne State Warriors Men’s Baseball program competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) at the NCAA Division II level and plays its home games in Detroit, Michigan (official website).
