The Wayne State University men’s tennis team concluded its participation in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship with a 4-0 loss against Grand Valley State University. The match took place on Sunday in Midland, Michigan. Wayne State, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, faced the top-seeded Lakers, who ended the tournament with a record of 16-2, while Wayne State’s season record stood at 15-7.
In the doubles segment, Wayne State was unable to secure the point, as they lost two matches. Cedric Drenth and Tom Wasner, representing Wayne State at the No. 1 doubles position, were defeated 4-6 by their opponents Lucas Gonzalez and Victor Lopes. In the No. 3 spot, Max Faniel teamed up with Benjamin Hill, and they were defeated 1-6 by Denys Zamaraiev and Joaquin Minguez Ribera. Meanwhile, George Day and Sam Knowles were leading 4-3 in their match against Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov when play was stopped due to the outcomes of the other matches.
The singles matches saw similar challenges for Wayne State. Cedric Drenth, competing in the No. 1 singles spot, was toppled by Denys Zamaraiev, losing 5-7, 0-6. Tom Wasner faced Victor Lopes in the No. 3 position but fell 6-7 (3-7), 2-6, while Sam Knowles was defeated 2-6, 6-7 (1-7) at No. 3 singles. The matches featuring Benjamin Hill and Luis Klaus were underway but went unfinished as Grand Valley State clinched the overall victory.
