Three athletes from Wayne State University’s men’s fencing team concluded their participation in the 2025 NCAA Championships on Friday. The team currently holds 14th place after the men’s events, with final standings pending the women’s championships scheduled for March 22-23.

Representing Wayne State were Mahmoud Elsayed from Tanta, Egypt; Ethan Leung from Hong Kong; and Zeyad Nofal from Cairo, Egypt.

In the epee category, Elsayed achieved a record of 14 wins and 8 losses in pool play, with a touch differential of +15 (89-74). He entered the direct elimination stage as the fourth seed. In a closely contested semi-final bout, he was narrowly defeated by his brother Mohamed Elsayed of Long Island University, who went on to win the National Championship. Despite this loss, Mahmoud Elsayed’s performance earned him First Team All-American Honors as he finished tied for third place.

In foil competition, Leung recorded one victory against Lawrence’s Thomas Craley with a score of 5-1 but ended with an overall record of 1-22 over two days. He narrowly lost four bouts by scores of 5-4.

Nofal participated in sabre events and had a record of six wins and nine losses before medically withdrawing from further competition.

The Wayne State women’s fencing team is set to begin its championship events on Saturday, March 23.
