The Wayne State University men’s basketball team secured a 92-85 victory over Roosevelt in Chicago on Thursday night, marking their second consecutive road win. The Warriors now hold a 12-11 overall record and are 9-8 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), while Roosevelt drops to 4-20 overall and 3-14 in conference play.
Wayne State started strong, outscoring Roosevelt 11-4 early in the first half with contributions from Jotham Nweke, Carlos Paul III, and Jalen Jenkins. Despite an initial comeback by the Lakers, who took a brief lead after scoring nine straight points, Wayne State responded with several runs of their own. By halftime, the Warriors led 41-35 after shooting over 53 percent from the field and recording 13 assists to six turnovers.
In the second half, Wayne State extended its lead to as much as 12 points. Although Roosevelt managed to narrow the gap multiple times—coming within five points at one stage—the Warriors maintained control and finished with a seven-point margin.
Carlos Paul III led Wayne State with a career-high 25 points and collected his fifth career double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds. Jalen Jenkins also set a personal best with 20 points and added eight assists. Jordan Briggs contributed 13 points while Nweke scored 11. Marshall Thorn was close to another double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
On defense, three Warriors recorded steals and five players each had one blocked shot.
For Roosevelt, Hamahrie Bowers scored a game-high 36 points along with nine rebounds. Mikey West added 20 points and Dante Sawyer finished with 17.
Wayne State’s performance included shooting just over 51 percent from the field compared to Roosevelt’s even 50 percent. The Warriors made up ground at the free throw line by converting on 84 percent of their attempts versus Roosevelt’s 80 percent. They also won key statistical battles in rebounding (38-29), assists (23-8 turnover ratio), bench scoring (14-6), and points in the paint (44-34).
Wayne State will continue its season on Saturday against Parkside at De Simone Arena.
