The Wayne State University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 23 nationally, secured a 6-1 victory over Fairmont State University on Friday evening in Charleston, West Virginia. This result brings both teams to a 3-1 overall record for the season.
In doubles play, Wayne State won two out of three matches to take an early lead. George Day and Thomas Mathys defeated Gabriel Masu and Keagan Karunagaran 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Tom Wasner and Sam Knowles also earned a 6-2 win against Mohamed Mostafa Moens and Gustavo Masu in the No. 3 slot. The top doubles match saw Harry Forsyth and Luis Klaus fall to Noah Liedtke and Haruto Kusunoki in a close tiebreaker, 7-6.
During singles competition, Day overcame Liedtke with scores of 6-4, 6-2 at the top spot. Klaus recovered from losing his first set to Kusunoki by winning the next two sets, finishing with scores of 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. Wasner split his first two sets with Karunagaran but claimed victory after a tight third-set tiebreaker (6-4, 4-6, 10-8) at No. 3 singles.
Mathys recorded a straight-set win over Mostafa Moens (6-2, 6-1) at No. 5 singles while Forsyth posted a win against Jasper de Bruijn (6-4, 6-3) at No. 6 singles. Benjamin Hill was narrowly defeated by Gustavo Masu in the fourth singles match (7-6, 1-6, 10-12).
Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s intercollegiate athletics program based in Detroit, Michigan (official website).
