The Wayne State University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 20 nationally, secured a 6-1 victory against Hillsdale College on Saturday in Hillsdale, Michigan. This win brings Wayne State’s overall record to 6-1 for the season and marks their fourth consecutive win over teams from the Midwest region.
In doubles play, Luis Klaus and Harry Forsyth won at the No. 1 position with a 6-4 result over Ellis Klanduch and Henry Hammond. The pairing of George Day and Thomas Mathys also achieved a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles against Samuel Plys and Ryan Papazov. At the third spot, Sam Knowles and Benjamin Hill defeated Patrick Cretu and Jackson Clements with a score of 6-3.
During singles matches, George Day earned a straight-set victory over Papazov (6-0, 6-3) at No. 1 singles. Klaus continued his strong performance by defeating Hammond (6-4, 6-1) in the second singles slot. Freshman Mathys posted another win for Wayne State with a 6-4, 6-1 result over Plys at No. 3 singles.
Benjamin Hill contributed with a win against Klanduch (6-3, 6-4) in the fourth position. Forsyth competed in the sixth singles match and secured a close victory over Alex Cordero Lopez (6-7 [4-7], 7-6 [7-3], 10-7). Knowles was defeated by Cretu (3-6, 6-7 [6-8]) in the fifth spot.
Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s intercollegiate athletics program based in Detroit, Michigan (official website). The team competes in NCAA Division II as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (official website), focusing on competitive excellence and athlete development both within conference play and national events (official website).
The team will return to Detroit to host Case Western Reserve on March 1 at Duchene Athletic Facility.
