The Wayne State University men’s golf team, ranked 25th nationally, began their spring season with a victory at Ohio Dominican’s Pawleys Island Beach Bash. The Warriors secured first place by a narrow margin of one stroke over the second-place team, USC Beaufort, and third-place Gannon.

Max Leppelmeier from Wauseon, Ohio, led the individual performances by claiming Medalist Honors for the second time in his collegiate career. He achieved a personal best two-day score of 139 (-5), surpassing his previous record by three shots.

“Six out of seven!!!,” remarked head coach Mike Horn. “Congratulations to Max (Leppelmeier) on his second collegiate win. He battled Josh DiCarlo all day and came out on top. Congratulations to Max and Josh for making the All-Tournament Team. Also a shout out to Josh Lahner for winning the putting contest on Tuesday. This was an extremely important win for the team beating Gannon and USC Beaufort, who we never see and are ranked ahead of us. We’ve got to get everybody going in order to compete at the NCAA Tournament, but this is a very good start.”

In addition to Leppelmeier’s performance, other notable finishes included Josh DiCarlo from Amherstburg, Ontario, who finished third with a score of -2 (142). Several other Warriors contributed solid scores as well.

Wayne State will next participate in the Findlay Spring Invite scheduled for March 24-25 at Boone’s Trace National Golf Club in Richmond, Kentucky.
