The Wayne State University men’s tennis team faced a challenging match against Purdue University Northwest, concluding in a 4-3 defeat. Ranked 19th, Wayne State had a close contest against 29th ranked Purdue on Saturday in Griffith, Indiana.

In the doubles matches, Cedric Drenth and Tom Wasner achieved a win over Purdue’s Alex Miguel van Lumich Lozano and Samuel Dickson with a score of 7-6 (7-2). However, Sam Knowles and Benjamin Hill were defeated 6-1 by Francisco Lanusse and Joao Martins. George Day and Luis Klaus also lost their match against Daniel Sroka and Pedro Diaz, scoring 7-5.

The singles matches saw Drenth secure a win in the No. 1 position against Lozano, finishing 6-4, 6-2, and tying the overall score. This victory places Drenth in a tie for the most career singles matches won in the program’s history alongside Niklas Karcz. Day won the first set in the No. 2 singles but ultimately lost to Dickson with scores of 6-4, 4-6, 1-6. Wasner was defeated by Diaz in the No. 3 position with scores of 5-7, 4-6.

Knowles achieved success in the No. 4 singles, winning against Martins 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-5. Hill claimed victory in the No. 6 position over Sroka, scoring 6-2, 6-2. Unfortunately, Klaus lost to Lanusse in a competitive match, ending with scores of 7-5, 5-7, 3-6 in the No. 5 position.

Wayne State’s next match is scheduled for Friday, April 18, where they will face Ferris State University at home.
