Wayne State University men’s tennis team secured a convincing victory over Roosevelt University, winning 7-0 in their first-ever encounter. The match took place on Friday and saw WSU, ranked No. 19, improve their overall record to 13-5, with a conference record of 4-1 in the GLIAC.

The doubles matches were dominated by Wayne State, as they claimed victory in all three positions. The duo of Cedric Drenth and Tom Wasner emerged victorious in the No. 1 position with a score of 6-2 against Victor Dorojan and DeMille Scarabello. In the No. 2 spot, George Day and Luis Klaus clinched a 7-6 (7-2) win over Enzo Soares and Justus Peters. At No. 3, Sam Knowles and Max Faniel defeated Jose Pablo Mozas Pavon and Lakshay Vivek 6-4.

In singles, the Wayne State players continued their impressive performance, sweeping all six matches. Cedric Drenth secured a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Victor Dorojan at the No. 1 position. George Day overcame an initial set loss to win 6-2 in the tie-breaker against Lakshay Vivek at No. 2. Freshman Tom Wasner and graduate student Luis Klaus both won their singles matches, with Wasner defeating DeMille Scarabello 6-0, 6-1, and Klaus beating Justus Peters 6-1, 6-0.

Benjamin Hill managed a come-from-behind victory in the No. 5 spot against Juan Pablo Espinosa, winning 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3). Max Faniel achieved his first collegiate singles win at No. 6, defeating David Hofman 6-2, 6-0.

Head Coach Bryan Morrow expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. “Got a nice win over Roosevelt. We mixed up our doubles squads, tried some different things, and looked pretty good,” he stated. He praised individual performances, highlighting Tom Wasner’s clean play, George Day’s resilience, Cedric Drenth’s solid match, and Max Faniel’s first win. “Overall, I am very proud of the boys and look forward to our match tomorrow,” he added.

The WSU men’s tennis team is set to play their next match against Purdue University Northwest on Saturday, April 12.
