Former Wayne State University women’s basketball player Monique Johnson died on July 28 after a battle with cancer. Johnson was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.

A visitation for Johnson is scheduled for August 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Q A Cantrell Funeral Services in Eastpointe, Michigan, with interment to follow the next day.

Johnson played four years for Wayne State between 1988 and 1993. She graduated from Detroit Osborn High School and began her college career by earning the GLIAC Freshman of the Year award in the 1988-89 season, averaging 12.4 points per game and ranking second on her team in assists, steals, and blocks.

In her sophomore year, Johnson was named Second Team All-GLIAC after starting all games that season and increasing her scoring average to 15.4 points per game. She scored in double figures in most games that year and recorded a total of 143 assists.

After an injury limited her play during the following season, she returned as a starter for most games in her junior year, leading the team with both assists and steals while averaging over eleven points per game.

As co-captain during her senior year (1992-93), Johnson started every game, finished second on the team in total points and steals, while leading in assists and blocks.

She remains Wayne State’s all-time leading scorer with 1,439 points and holds records including career field goals made at 568. Johnson also ranks among program leaders in several other categories such as games started (102), assists (382), steals (228), minutes played (3,075), assists per game (3.5), games played (109), scoring average (13.2 – minimum of thirty games played), free throws made (220), blocked shots (48), and rebounds (540).

Johnson graduated from Wayne State University in 2003 with a degree in marketing.
