The Wayne State University softball team concluded its spring break trip with a 7-5 record at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Warriors ended their trip with a split, defeating Saint Michael’s 9-0 in six innings and falling to Emporia State 12-0 in five innings.

In the first game against Saint Michael’s, the Warriors were initially held scoreless by Purple Knight pitcher CJ Davidson. However, they broke through in the fourth inning when freshman Morgan Williams singled up the middle. Katelyn DeWitt followed with a single, and Elly Koopman walked to load the bases. Hunter Near then hit a two-run single to give Wayne State the lead. Maddie Hool added another run with a blooper that eluded the second baseman’s diving attempt.

Sydney Long pitched for Wayne State and struck out ten batters over six innings without issuing a walk. She earned her second collegiate shutout as she limited Saint Michael’s to five hits.

In their second game of the day, Wayne State struggled against Emporia State. The Hornets scored three runs in the first inning and added seven more by the third inning, capitalizing on Warrior errors and hitting multiple extra-base hits.

Wayne State was limited offensively, managing only one hit—a single by Katelyn DeWitt—against Emporia State pitcher Gracie Rabe.

After returning from Florida, Wayne State is set to host Northwood at Gary L Bryce Field on March 19th.
