The Wayne State University softball team will wrap up its eight-game spring break trip with four final contests at the Space Coast Games in Melbourne, Florida, according to a March 15 announcement. The Warriors, who currently hold a 6-7 overall record, are set to play two games each on Monday and Tuesday.
This series of games is significant as it marks the conclusion of Wayne State’s non-conference schedule before returning home for conference play. The team competes at the NCAA Division II level and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, according to the official website.
On Monday, Wayne State will face Minnesota State-Mankato (10-10) and Saint Michael’s (1-3), followed by matchups against Saint Anselm (5-7) and Minot State (13-7) on Tuesday. The Warriors have mixed historical results against these teams: they are 4-7 all-time versus Minnesota State-Mankato, undefeated in five meetings with Saint Michael’s, winless in two games against Saint Anselm, and split their previous two contests with Minot State.
Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near leads Wayne State offensively with a .400 batting average and a .510 on-base percentage. Sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt is hitting .333, while Elly Koopman has driven in a team-high ten runs. In pitching, junior Sydney Long holds a 4-4 record with a 2.98 earned run average.
The program operates as a collegiate athletic team based in Detroit, Michigan according to the official website. After completing their Florida schedule, the Warriors will return to Michigan for conference play against Davenport and Ferris State.
