The Wayne State University softball team won both of its games on March 13 during the first day of its spring break trip in Melbourne, Florida. The Warriors defeated Mercy University 8-1 in the opener and then secured a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Thomas More.
These wins improve Wayne State’s overall record to 6-5 and highlight the team’s performance as it competes at the NCAA Division II level, according to the official website. The program is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and operates as a collegiate athletic program based in Detroit, Michigan, as reported by the official website.
In the first game against Mercy University, Wayne State took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning and maintained control throughout. Sophomore Elly Koopman pitched a complete game, allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out two batters. Maddie Hool and Julia Sandles each recorded two hits for Wayne State.
The second game against Thomas More was closely contested. After falling behind by two runs in the fourth inning, Wayne State tied it up with a home run from Kate DeWitt. The teams traded leads before heading into extra innings under international tiebreaker rules. In the bottom of the eighth, Maddie Hool drove in pinch-runner Ellery Garver for the winning run. Junior pitcher Sydney Long threw all eight innings for Wayne State, giving up three earned runs on eight hits and striking out five.
Looking ahead, Wayne State is scheduled to play Franklin Pierce and Ohio Dominican next as part of its spring break schedule.
Wayne State Warriors Women’s Softball continues to represent its university at a competitive level within NCAA Division II athletics and will look to build on these victories as their season progresses.
