The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) recently announced its postseason awards, recognizing four members of the Wayne State University men’s tennis team. The awards highlighted Cedric Drenth’s performance, naming him the GLIAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year.
Drenth was the only member of Wayne State’s team to be selected for the All-GLIAC First Team in singles. George Day and Tom Wasner were honored with All-GLIAC Second Team recognition, and Cole Anderson received an All-GLIAC Honorable Mention. The doubles team of Drenth and Day was also voted onto the All-GLIAC First Team, showcasing their successful efforts throughout the season.
Drenth proved to be a key player, challenging competitors as the team’s top singles and doubles player. He achieved a singles record of 23-8 and a doubles record of 24-7, partnering with both Day and Wasner. Drenth’s achievements in the 2024-25 season include three GLIAC Player of the Week honors and losing only two matches in the conference, with a 6-1 record in both singles and doubles. Drenth also set records at WSU for the most career singles and doubles victories and is the only player to surpass 100 wins in both categories. This award marks Drenth’s second recognition as GLIAC Player of the Year, adding to the four consecutive years a Wayne State player has received the honor. Previous recipients include Dom Spicer, Daniel Grey, and Niklas Karcz.
During his first season, Day finished singles play with an 18-12 record, mainly playing in the No. 2 position but scoring a notable win at No. 1. In doubles, Day posted a record of 23-8, primarily competing alongside Drenth.
Wasner, a freshman like Day, achieved a singles record of 20-9, mostly in the No. 3 spot, and was undefeated in GLIAC play at 5-2. Although not named to the All-GLIAC Team in doubles, his performance was significant with a record of 17-10 and a 6-1 GLIAC record.
Anderson performed well in exhibition matches during his first season, securing victories in matches against Ferris State and Tiffin.
Looking ahead, the Wayne State men’s tennis team is set to compete in the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed on April 26.
