Wayne State University’s women’s tennis team emerged victorious against Purdue University Northwest with a 7-0 triumph as the season approaches its conclusion. The No. 23-ranked squad from Wayne State now boasts a 10-3 overall record and remains unbeaten in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
According to reports, the team’s recent victory has secured them at least a share of the GLIAC regular season title. There is potential for them to secure solo possession of first place in their next match against Ferris State University.
The team’s doubles performance was noteworthy, securing all three matches and the first point of the encounter. Top duo Anais Ruyssen and Dea Gorgidze defeated their counterparts Tamiya Lintz and Elisoa Andriantefihasina 6-1. Malak Arfat and Justine Beaulieu performed dominantly in their match with a 6-0 win. Lastly, Shanice Weekes and Martyna Szpakowska completed the sweep with a 6-1 result.
In singles play, Ruyssen and Gorgidze both secured wins, with Ruyssen winning 6-0, 6-1 over Lintz and Gorgidze victorious 6-4, 6-3 against Andriantefihasina. Weekes overcame her opponent in a tight three-set match, while Beaulieu also secured her win after a competitive battle.
The match between Shantala Uzcategui and Alma Vazquez Rioja was intense, with Uzcategui ultimately taking the first set, facing a comeback but securing the win with a 10-8 tiebreaker. Malak Arfat was leading 3-0 over Salma Raslan before the match was suspended, resulting in a default win for Wayne State.
Wayne State’s women’s tennis team is set to face Ferris State University next, which could see them crowned as outright GLIAC regular season champions.
