The Wayne State University women’s basketball team secured a narrow 68-67 victory over Michigan Tech University at the WSU Fieldhouse in Detroit on Saturday. This win marks the Warriors’ fourth consecutive victory and keeps their perfect home record intact at 10-0 for the season.
Junior guard McKenna Ferguson reached a career milestone by scoring her 1,000th point, becoming only the 21st player in program history to achieve this feat in just 84 games.
The game saw both teams exchanging leads throughout. In the first quarter, Gabi Lutchka opened scoring for Wayne State before Michigan Tech tied it up. After a series of runs from both sides, Wayne State led by three points at the end of the quarter. The second quarter remained competitive with brief surges from each team, but Wayne State held a six-point lead going into halftime.
In the third quarter, both teams struggled offensively early on before trading baskets. Wayne State extended its lead to ten points during this period, though Michigan Tech closed the gap to five by quarter’s end. The final quarter saw Michigan Tech narrowing the deficit again and bringing it within one point late in the game. Koko Sylvester hit her third three-pointer of the contest to give Wayne State a four-point cushion with under two minutes left. Michigan Tech responded quickly, but Lutchka’s steal on Michigan Tech’s last possession secured the win for Wayne State.
Wayne State shot 43.1 percent from the field and made seven out of twenty-two attempts from beyond the arc. At the free throw line, they converted eleven out of thirteen shots. Michigan Tech finished with better overall shooting but struggled from long range and at free throws. The Huskies outrebounded Wayne State 37-29.
Ferguson led all scorers with 19 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Lutchka contributed a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds while also adding four assists and three steals. Taylor Thompson recorded ten points and six assists, while Sylvester added another ten points including her three triples.
For Michigan Tech, Kendall Standfest scored fifteen points and collected six rebounds; Dani Nuest provided twelve points off the bench; Kloe Zentkowski finished with eleven points along with six boards and four assists.
Wayne State will next travel to Chicago to face Roosevelt University on February 19 at Goodman Center.
