The Wayne State University women’s tennis team concluded its season with a 4-0 loss to Midwestern State in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Sanlando Park, Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Warriors, ranked No. 27 nationally this season, ended their campaign tied for fifth place in the tournament for the third consecutive year.
Midwestern State secured the doubles point by winning both first and second doubles matches with identical 6-2 scores. Wayne State’s Martyna Szpakowska and Shantala Uzcategui were leading 3-2 in their unfinished match against Sarah Mazaraki and Sydney Williams at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, MSU extended its lead to 2-0 with a victory at first singles and furthered it to 3-0 following a win at No. 4 singles. Jessica Binzari defeated Anais Ruyssen at the top singles flight, while Sofia Giraldo edged Shanice Weekes at fourth singles.
The match concluded as Sydney Williams claimed a win over Szpakowska at sixth singles with scores of 6-1, 7-5.
Several matches remained unfinished when play was halted: Malak Arafat was leading her opponent; Dea Gorgidze had split sets; and Uzcategui was ahead in her match.
Wayne State will lose only one player to graduation—Anais Ruyssen—who has been recognized as GLIAC Player of the Year three times during her tenure. The team looks forward to returning key players such as Arafat, Gorgidze, Szpakowska, Uzcategui, Justine Beaulieu, Shanice Weekes, and Dessyre Obedencio for the next season under head coach Yahsha Moore.
