Wayne State University’s women’s tennis team will participate in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament as the top seed following their undefeated 8-0 record in conference matches. The tournament will take place from April 25-27 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
As the No. 1 seed, Wayne State has received a first-round bye. Their first match will be against the winner of the Saginaw Valley State University versus Lake Superior State University match. Should Wayne State win the semifinals, they will face either Grand Valley State University, Ferris State University, or Davenport University for the championship.
Regarding the tournament’s schedule, the first round will occur on Friday, April 25, beginning at 4:00 PM. Matches continue with the second round on Saturday, April 26, at 3:00 PM, and the final round on Sunday, April 27, also at 3:00 PM.
Wayne State’s previous conference win against Saginaw Valley State took place with a score of 6-1. Saginaw finished their season with a 5-11 overall record and a 4-4 GLIAC record. Lake Superior State concluded with a 7-8 overall record and a matching 4-4 conference standing.
On the other side of the bracket, Grand Valley State enters as the No. 2 seed with a 13-4 overall record, including a 7-1 record in GLIAC play. Their only conference loss was against Wayne State, 5-2. Ferris State finished their season with an 11-7 record, while Davenport concluded with an 11-12 mark.
In the latest NCAA Midwest Region Rankings, Wayne State is ranked No. 1. They are joined by Grand Valley State and Ferris State as the ranked GLIAC teams. The NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament will feature the conference tournament winners, along with four teams receiving at-large bids.
In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, the Wayne State women’s tennis team is ranked No. 24 nationally. In singles, Martyna Szpakowska is ranked No. 63. Furthermore, Szpakowska paired with Malak Arafat ranks No. 16 in doubles, while Dea Gorgidze and Anais Ruyssen are ranked No. 24.
