The Wayne State University women’s tennis team, ranked 23rd in the nation, is preparing for matches in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula against Lake Superior State University and Michigan Tech University. The team will face the Lakers on Friday, April 4, at 10:00 AM, followed by a match against the Huskies on Saturday, April 5, at 12:00 PM.

Recently, the Warriors added two more victories in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), defeating Davenport with a 7-0 score and overcoming Grand Valley State 5-2. The Wayne State team succeeded in all doubles matches against Davenport and secured a clean sweep in the singles competition.

Mike Andrews, in his first season as the coach of the Lake Superior State team, has led the team to a 5-6 overall record with a 2-2 standing in GLIAC play. The Lakers aim to continue their winning momentum after victories over Purdue Northwest and Roosevelt last weekend. Wayne State had previously defeated the Lakers 7-0 in their last matchup and has won the last 17 encounters.

Michigan Tech, with a 4-4 overall record, also stands at 2-2 in GLIAC matches. The team, led by interim head coach Riley Schreck, achieved wins over RU and PNW last weekend. Wayne State secured a 6-1 victory over Michigan Tech in their past seven meetings.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently ranked Wayne State as the No. 23 team nationally, an improvement from their previous position at 32nd. Anais Ruyssen is ranked 47th, and Martyna Szpakowska 48th in singles. In doubles, Dea Gorgidze and Ruyssen are ranked 12th, while the pair of Malak Arafat and Szpakowska are 15th.
