For months, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been grappling with state Republicans over the restrictions she imposed on residents and businesses, which are aimed at slowing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This week, Whitmer announced another round of restrictions as cases and hospitalizations in the state rise to levels not seen before.
In response to the new restrictions, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy has issued a statement on what can be done to truly combat the pandemic. These suggestions mainly revolve around rolling back regulations that are hurting health care organizations and hindering their efforts.

Lindsay Killen, vice president for strategic outreach & communications at the Mackinac Center, said, "The focus in Michigan has been on limiting what citizens can do. But there is something else that government can do -- get out of the way. Earlier this year, Gov. Whitmer smartly rolled back 'Certificate of Need' regulations on medical providers and licensing rules on workers. The state should suspend laws that limit hospitals and workers to help Michigan fight the virus," according to Mackinac.org.
The newest restrictions are almost certain to lead to more lawsuits, delays in the fight against the pandemic and additional damage to Michigan businesses.
