The COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the lockdowns and restrictions associated with it, have had a heavy impact on the economy in Michigan and around the rest of the country.
However, there are signs of life in the Michigan economy and job market, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential. The latest unemployment numbers are an indicator that the economy is bouncing back, perhaps stronger than many thought possible.
In April, at the height of restrictions and business closures, unemployment numbers reached nearly 1 million in Michigan. Today, however, the number of unemployed residents stands at just under 170,000.
This means that while the state still has work to do, the situation has drastically improved since the pandemic began, and this has happened in the face of closures and restrictions. Still, experts are worried as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently approved a new set of measures, intended to slow the spread of the virus, that may instead stifle the economy further.
