The Wayne State University Board of Governors has approved $5.2 million for significant upgrades to the university's athletic facilities. The decision supports ongoing efforts to improve spaces for students and the broader community.

The funding will be used for renovations at the Matthaei Natatorium and enhancements at the Wayne State Soccer Complex. Planned improvements at the natatorium include replacing key systems, updating liners, and installing new underwater tiling in swimming and diving areas. These changes are intended to increase safety, efficiency, and reliability for both athletes and recreational users.

At the soccer complex, new bleachers, team shelters, a press box, and expanded storage will be added. A 3,000-square-foot support facility is also planned to serve multiple programs. Locker rooms inside Matthaei will be renovated to provide better spaces for women's soccer players and other student-athletes.

"Wayne State Athletics is incredibly grateful to the university for continuing to invest in our facilities," said Erika Wallace, WSU Director of Athletics. "This $5.2 million investment represents more than just construction projects, it's an investment in our student-athletes, our campus, and our community. These facilities not only enhance the student-athlete experience but also create opportunities for local programs and events that bring people to our campus and strengthen our connection to the city of Detroit."

These projects follow recent developments at the soccer complex such as new lighting installed in 2024 and a high-performance turf field added five years ago. Funding comes from the university’s Special Reserve for Non-Recurring Funds with additional support from Athletics Endowment resources.
