Even though property taxes are still due in Wayne County, the treasurer’s office is closed to the public. County treasurer Eric Sabree posted a video update and press release explaining the situation to taxpayers.

“This decision was made in order to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. We are in total agreement with the governor’s emergency declaration and the efforts of Wayne County leadership to protect the health and safety of our employees and the taxpayers who visit our office,” he says in the video release

In a press release, he noted that more than 400 people visit his office on any given day, and long lines can form when people are waiting to pay their property taxes.

Instead of paying in person, people can pay online, at DivDat kiosks throughout the county, by phone or by mail. Citizens can also drop sealed payments into the drop box on the first floor of the county treasurer’s office.

In light of the broad economic shutdown as people observe the stay-at-home order, the treasurer said he was suspending all foreclosure activity for the 2020 calendar year. Citizens still must pay their taxes, however.
