Four members of the Michigan State track and field program competed in the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.
"We look forward to the championship this weekend," said Director of Track and Field Lisa Breznau before the trip. "Given the scope and competitiveness of qualifying, it's impressive to be here. With that being said, Jenna, Morgan, Sophia, and Trevor have done the work to qualify and have experience competing at this level. Now they have the opportunity to let go and have some fun."
Among those qualifying for the national championships, which were held at the Birmingham CrossPlex, were distance runners Morgan Beadlescomb (men's mile and 3000m) and Jenna Magness (women's 5000m), who were joined by pole vaulters Sophia Franklin and Trevor Stephenson.
Beadlescomb garnered his first NCAA silver medal when he came in second in the men's mile, only .05 seconds away from a national title, according to the university.
"Morgan is just an incredibly gifted athlete, and he has the skillset and talent to perform well at this level," added Breznau. "He has an amazing range. There's not that many men out there at the NCAA Championships that could run the 5000m, the 3000m or the mile and have a shot at winning each of those. He's that type of person and those people are really rare and special. I think the fact that he's part of our program - when you look at what he's done not only this year but in his entire body of work to get to this point - is certainly impressive and a testament to being a part of Michigan State, and of the mindset that it takes to be really good at our university. It lifts up our program, and it lifts up our athletic department and the university as well."
The Michigan State track and field program will begin the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays March 24-26.
